A Subtle Delight

At first glance, the Red-rumped Woodpecker might seem a bit modest. Smaller than its more flamboyant woodpecker cousins, this bird measures just 15-16 cm (5.9-6.3 inches) and sports olive-brown upperparts with subtle touches of yellow and red. However, look closer and you’ll discover a symphony of subtle colors. Its underparts are streaked with delicate brown and white stripes, and its face is adorned with charming whitish streaks against an olive-brown background.

A Touch of Scarlet

The true star of the show is undoubtedly the bird’s namesake: the red rump. This crimson patch on the lower back and upper tail coverts adds a vibrant touch of color, making the Red-rumped Woodpecker a delightful surprise amidst the green mountain foliage.

Spotting a Red-rumped Beauty

These little dynamos are most active during the day, flitting from branch to branch in search of food. They prefer a variety of habitats, from the lush lowland rainforests to, you guessed it, the mountain forests where our retreat is located. So keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails or relax on your balcony: you might catch a glimpse of this feathered wonder.

Listen Closely!

While the Red-rumped Woodpecker is not known for a particularly elaborate song, it does have a distinctive drumming call. Listen for a rapid series of dry taps echoing through the trees; that might be your cue to look for a red flash among the foliage.

A Forest Drummer

Like all woodpeckers, the Red-rumped Woodpecker plays a vital role in the forest ecosystem. Its sharp beak is perfectly adapted for excavating insects hidden beneath the bark of trees. This not only provides it with a tasty meal but also helps control insect populations that might otherwise harm the trees.

A Feathered Friend

The Red-rumped Woodpecker is a charming resident of the Costa Rican highlands. With its subtle charm and vibrant touch of color, this little drummer is sure to add a touch of magic to your birdwatching experience at our mountain retreat. So grab your binoculars, pay attention, and get ready to be captivated by this special Costa Rican bird!
