This small songbird, belonging to the Furnariidae family, is a recent taxonomic split from its close relative, the Cinnamon-throated Foliage-gleaner. Found only in Costa Rica and western Panama, the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner is a true highland resident.

Observing a Shy Gem

While you may hear its melodious chirps and whistles echoing through the dense foliage, catching a glimpse of the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner can be a delightful challenge. These insectivorous birds live up to their name, favoring the leafy canopy. They meticulously search for insects among the leaves, hopping from branch to branch with surprising agility. Their plumage offers excellent camouflage: a warm olive-brown on the upper parts with a touch of rufous on the crown and a lighter buff on the underside. Look for a short, dark bill and a long, dark eye stripe that adds a touch of character to their face.

A Forest Symphony

While not the most striking bird, the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner significantly contributes to the vibrant soundscape of the Costa Rican highlands. Its song is a series of clear, whistled notes, often repeated in short phrases. It’s a cheerful melody that adds to the forest chorus, a reminder of the hidden life bustling among the leaves.

Habitat Haven

The Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner thrives in mature, humid mountain forests. These birds are particularly fond of areas with dense undergrowth and rich in epiphytes (plants growing on other plants), a perfect environment for finding tasty insects.

At our mountain retreat, we are committed to preserving the lush ecosystem that provides shelter to the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner and countless other avian residents. By protecting the forest, we ensure that future generations can discover the wonder of this shy charmer and the rich tapestry of life it represents.

Tips for Birdwatchers

If you wish to add the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner to your Costa Rica bird list, patience is key. Early morning is often the best time for birdwatching, as these small insectivores are most active while searching for their breakfast. Listen for their distinctive song and try to spot them within the foliage. Binoculars are essential, as their preference for the upper canopy makes them difficult to see with the naked eye. Opt for guided birdwatching tours if you want expert help in spotting this charming resident of the Costa Rican highlands.

So, as you explore the green mountains on your next Costa Rican retreat, keep an ear out for the captivating melody of the Chiriquí Foliage-gleaner. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might catch a glimpse of this special resident flitting among the leaves, adding another delightful chapter to your birdwatching adventure in Costa Rica.
