This aptly named raptor is not your typical falcon. Unlike its broad-winged cousins that soar over open plains, the Tiny Jewel Falcon prefers the dense foliage of the rainforest canopy. Here, its compact size and short, rounded wings allow it to maneuver masterfully among branches and leaves.

A Camouflaged Predator

Spotting a Tiny Jewel Falcon in the wild is a true feat. Its plumage is a marvel of camouflage. Most adults have a dark slate-gray back, blending perfectly with the shaded depths of the rainforest. Its underside is a beautiful white canvas finely barred with black, mimicking the sunlight filtering through the leaves. Some subspecies even have a rufous morph, with reddish-brown tones that further enhance its ability to disappear into the forest.

A Patient Hunter

The Tiny Jewel Falcon is a patient hunter that relies on surprise attacks rather than high-speed chases. It perches on a hidden branch, its sharp yellow eyes scanning the forest floor for unsuspecting prey. Its diet mainly consists of lizards, frogs, snakes, and even large insects like cicadas. With powerful pressure and sharp talons, it silently descends and captures its prey in mid-flight.

A Call in the Stillness

While the Tiny Jewel Falcon may be elusive, you are more likely to detect it by ear. Its loud and prolonged call, a sharp “ki-ki-ki-kiii,” often pierces the stillness of the rainforest. This piercing cry serves multiple purposes: attracting mates, defending territory, and staying in contact with its partner.

Glimpsing a Wonder

If you are lucky enough to see a Tiny Jewel Falcon in your Costa Rican retreat, take a moment to appreciate this rainforest marvel. Its secretive nature and mastery of camouflage make it a true testament to the incredible adaptations found in this vibrant ecosystem.
