Tras el velo del misterio: el enigmático Pibí Oscuro

Home / aves / Tras el velo del misterio: el enigmático Pibí Oscuro

In the high mountains of Costa Rica, kissed by clouds, dwells a stealthy resident flitting among the trees. This elusive bird, the Dark Pewee (Contopus lugubris), adds a touch of intrigue to the vibrant tapestry of life in our mountain retreat. While not as common as its colorful neighbors, spotting this bird is a true treasure for bird lovers.

A creature of the clouds

The Dark Pewee belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is not completely dark. Imagine a bird dressed in a sooty gray suit, with a hint of olive peeking through its belly. A prominent crest adds an air of distinction to its appearance. This crest is slightly more pronounced than that of other pewees, making it a useful feature for identification.

These solitary birds prefer the cooler climate of the Talamanca mountain forests, specifically between 1250 and 2150 meters above sea level. So, if you’re staying at our mountain retreat, keep an eye out during your walks or while relaxing on your balcony; you might be lucky enough to see one perched on a branch at the forest edge or flitting through a clearing.

A mysterious life

The Dark Pewee is a creature of cryptic habits. Unlike its more vocal relatives, it is not known for elaborate songs. However, you might hear its short, sharp calls («pip») echoing through the mountains. Patience and keen observation are key to adding this bird to your Costa Rica bird list.

While much about its breeding habits remains unknown, we know that females build a broad, cup-shaped nest with moss and lichens. This nest, lined with plant fibers, is often placed high on a branch, offering a safe haven for its young.

A glimpse into the highlands

Spotting a Dark Pewee is a privilege reserved for those who venture into the cooler, higher areas of Costa Rica. Here, in our mountain retreat, you’ll be surrounded by the perfect habitat for these enigmatic birds. With a bit of patience and a good dose of enthusiasm for birdwatching, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this unique highland resident of Costa Rica.
