A Traveling Champion

The Short-tailed Shearwater holds the title of the most abundant seabird species in Australian waters. But its true glory is its incredible migratory journey. Imagine this: Twice a year, these tireless birds embark on a round trip of approximately 15,000 kilometers!

Breeding in the Antipodes

Their breeding grounds are primarily located on islands in southern Australia, where they take advantage of the cold waters and abundant food sources during the southern hemisphere’s summer. Here, they raise their chicks in burrows dug into soft soil.

Venturing North

With the arrival of summer in the northern hemisphere, the Short-tailed Shearwater undergoes a complete change. They transform into long-distance adventurers, leaving their breeding grounds and heading towards the North Pacific.

A Glimpse in Costa Rica

These remarkable birds can be observed off the coasts of Costa Rica during this northward migration, usually from October to January, and again in May. Keep your eyes peeled for dark silhouettes with narrow wings gliding effortlessly over the waves, with their twisted wings flapping at a rapid and energetic pace.

Masters of the Open Sea

Short-tailed Shearwaters are perfectly adapted to their oceanic lifestyle. Their streamlined bodies and long wings allow for efficient flight, while their strong legs propel them underwater in search of prey. Keen eyesight helps them spot small fish, squid, and crustaceans near the surface, while a special gland excretes a salty oil that acts as a defense mechanism against predators.

Spot the Subtle Differences

Distinguishing a Short-tailed Shearwater from its close relative, the Sooty Shearwater, can be tricky. Both share dark brown plumage. However, the Short-tailed Shearwater tends to be slightly lighter and has more noticeably twisted wings. Additionally, their beaks are shorter and their heads appear rounder.

A Citizen of the World

The remarkable journey of the Short-tailed Shearwater connects continents and ecosystems. While their breeding grounds are far to the south, their presence in Costa Rican waters during certain seasons adds another layer of wonder to the country’s rich biodiversity.

Hear the Call of Nature

Next time you visit our mountain retreat, take a detour to the Pacific coast. With a bit of luck, you might witness the grand spectacle of the Short-tailed Shearwater, a testament to the enduring power of nature and the spirit of boundless exploration in the animal kingdom.
