Oceanic Travelers

Unlike many of the birds you will find at our retreat, the White-tailed Tropicbird is a creature of the open sky. These medium-sized seabirds, with a wingspan reaching almost a meter, are made to glide over vast ocean expanses. Their streamlined bodies and long, narrow wings allow them to stay aloft for long periods, effortlessly navigating the warm currents of the tropical Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Spotting a Celestial Carrochero

Seeing a White-tailed Tropicbird is a truly unforgettable experience. Its plumage is a marvel of contrasting colors: a dazzling white body accented by bold black markings on the wings and a black mask over the eyes. But the most striking feature is undoubtedly its namesake: the long white tail feathers. These elegant feathers can more than double the bird’s total length, making it a spectacle to behold as it glides effortlessly through the blue sky.

Its scientific name, Phaethon lepturus, translates from ancient Greek as «bright as the sun with a slender tail,» a fitting description for these celestial cocheteros.

A Life on the Wing

White-tailed Tropicbirds are skilled aerial predators, diving from great heights to catch fish, squid, and other marine creatures from the water’s surface. Their beak, ranging from yellow-orange to red-orange, is perfectly adapted for spearing their prey.

While they spend most of their lives gliding over the waves, they come ashore to breed. Unlike the rainforest birds you might see at our retreat, White-tailed Tropicbirds prefer to nest on isolated islands with rocky cliffs or even in crevices of continental shores. Their courtship displays are a sight to see, with males performing elaborate aerial acrobatics to impress potential females.

A Glimpse of Paradise

Unfortunately, due to their preference for nesting on remote islands, White-tailed Tropicbirds are not common in Costa Rica. However, if you plan a trip to the Caribbean coast, particularly around the idyllic beaches of Guanacaste or Puntarenas, you might be lucky enough to see these magnificent birds soaring above the turquoise waters.

Even if you don’t encounter a White-tailed Tropicbird during your Costa Rican adventure, the incredible diversity of birds in our country will surely leave you in awe. From the vibrant toucans of the rainforest to the majestic hawks circling the mountain peaks, a feathered friend awaits discovery around every corner. So keep your eyes peeled, and who knows, you might spot a rare visitor like the White-tailed Tropicbird, a reminder of the wonders hidden behind the mountains.
