El Búho Moteado No Listado: Un Pequeño Cazador de los Bosques Nubosos

In our mountain retreat, nestled in the emerald heart of Costa Rica’s cloud forests, the symphony of bird song is a constant companion. But among the chorus of familiar melodies, there is a more subtle tone, a whisper in the wind: the song of the Unlisted Spotted Owl.

This tiny highland inhabitant is a true marvel. Measuring only 17 to 20 centimeters tall, it is one of the smallest owl species in Central America. Unlike its spotted cousins, the Unlisted Spotted Owl lives up to its name, sporting a deep sepia brown mantle on the upper parts, throat, and upper chest. The lower chest and belly offer a delightful contrast in a warm cinnamon color, giving it an almost bicolored appearance in the forest’s dim light.

Its facial disc, framed by a fine white edge, houses large penetrating yellow eyes that seem to pierce the twilight. Tiny white “eyebrows” and a whitish chin complete this expressive face.

But don’t be fooled by its adorable appearance. The Unlisted Spotted Owl is a formidable nocturnal predator. As night falls, it emerges from its daytime refuge, often an abandoned woodpecker hole, to silently hunt insects, small lizards, and even rodents. Its sharp beak and powerful talons make it a master of the night, capable of catching unsuspecting prey.

While not as common as some other Costa Rican birds, the Unlisted Spotted Owl can be found at the highest altitudes of our mountain range, particularly in areas with paramo and elfin forests. These cloud-kissed ecosystems, with their stunted trees and dense vegetation, provide the perfect habitat for this elusive hunter.

Hearing its captivating call (a series of evenly spaced whistles or a feline meow) resonating in the silence of the night is a truly magical experience. It is a reminder that even in the quiet corners of the forest, life thrives in fascinating ways.

Tips for spotting the Unlisted Spotted Owl:

  • Night is key: As a nocturnal bird, your best chances of encountering an Unlisted Spotted Owl are after dark.
  • Listen for its call: Pay attention to detect the characteristic whistles or meows of the owl.
  • Head to High Elevations: Head to the cloud forests of the mountains for a better chance of spotting this small and discreet owl.
  • Guided Night Tours: Consider joining a guided night tour with experienced naturalists who know the best spots and calls to listen for.

By following these tips and keeping your eyes wide open (and ears too!), you might be lucky enough to see this remarkable little owl. And if you do, it’s a memory that will accompany you long after your retreat in Costa Rica.
