Encuentro con el Vibrante Tirano Panameño en las Montañas de Costa Rica

Home / aves / Encuentro con el Vibrante Tirano Panameño en las Montañas de Costa Rica

Here in our mountain retreat, nestled amidst the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, we are surrounded by a symphony of avian life. Today, we turn our binoculars towards a lively resident, the aptly named Panama Flycatcher (Myiarchus panamensis). Although its name suggests a Panamanian exclusivity, this cheerful bird also graces the forests of Costa Rica, Colombia, and Venezuela with its presence.

A Splash of Color in the Foliage

The Panama Flycatcher is a medium-sized songbird, typically measuring around 18 centimeters in length. Its plumage is a charming combination of olive green on the upper parts, which contrasts beautifully with a bright yellow belly. Look for darker wings with rufous wing bars and a distinctive crest on the head, adding a touch of majesty to its appearance.

A Master of the Hunt

This active flycatcher is a true predator of the skies, skilled in catching insects on the wing. Perched on a branch, it keeps a watchful eye, its head constantly turning to spot potential prey. Once a fly or other insect catches its attention, the Panama Flycatcher takes off with a burst of energy, snatching its meal in mid-air with its sharp beak.

A Versatile Habitat Specialist

While you can find the Panama Flycatcher in our mountain retreat, it is a remarkably adaptable bird. Its range extends across various ecosystems, from subtropical dry forests to lush rainforests, including mangroves and even highly degraded old-growth forests. This adaptability ensures a healthy population throughout its range.

Listen to the Song of the Mountains

The song of the Panama Flycatcher is a vibrant addition to the Costa Rican dawn chorus. Listen for a series of sharp whistled notes, often described as a «ti-ti-ti» or a «chur-chur-chur.» These calls, along with its distinctive crest, can be helpful clues in identifying this lively bird.

A Resident You Can Help Protect

Fortunately, the Panama Flycatcher is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. However, habitat loss is always a threat to bird populations. By supporting sustainable practices and ecotourism initiatives, we can all help ensure that this vibrant songster continues to grace the mountains of Costa Rica for generations to come.

Keep Your Eyes Open!

So, the next time you explore the trails around our retreat, keep an eye out for a flash of olive green and yellow gliding through the trees. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might be lucky enough to spot the Panama Flycatcher, a dazzling emblem of Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity.
