High in the canopy of Costa Rica’s mountainous rainforests, a symphony of chirps and whistles erupts. Among the emerald leaves, a brown streak darts upward, its long, sharp beak rhythmically tapping against the bark. This, my friends, is the dynamic and fascinating Cocoa Woodcreeper!

A Distinguished Bird
The Cocoa Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus susurrans) is a captivating member of the ovenbird family, easily identifiable by its warm, intense brown plumage. Unlike other woodcreepers, it forages on the upper surface of branches, rather than the underside. Look for the beige stripes adorning its head and chest, adding a touch of contrast to its earthy tones.
But the true giveaway is the impressive beak of the Cocoa Woodcreeper. Long, rather thick, and almost straight, it sports a pale grayish hue with fleshy tones. The upper edge, however, is slightly darker, hinting at the strength this beak possesses.
Un Maestro del Movimiento
Our mountain retreat places you in the heart of the Cocoa Woodcreeper’s territory. Here, you will witness its remarkable climbing skills. Unlike woodpeckers, its long tail provides exceptional balance as it traverses tree trunks with impressive agility. Its strong legs, with long toes and sharp claws, grip firmly onto the bark, allowing them to access insects hidden in nooks and crannies.
A Songster of the Rainforest
The Cocoa Woodcreeper is not only a delight to the eyes, but also a talented vocalist. It is one of the most vocal woodcreepers, filling the morning and afternoon air with its characteristic song. Imagine a series of clear, whistled notes, starting fast and then gradually slowing to a halt: a melodic call resonating through the rainforest, a beautiful serenade to its mate or a territorial proclamation.
A Follower of Abundance
The Cocoa Woodcreeper is an avid follower of mixed-species flocks, those vibrant gatherings of birds flitting together through the forest. These flocks often follow swarms of army ants, disturbing insects as the ants march relentlessly. The Cocoa Woodcreeper, with its keen eyes and even sharper beak, skillfully captures its prey amid this feeding frenzy.
