High in the lush canopy of Costa Rica’s rainforests, a quick movement catches your eye. It’s the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, a striking bird with striped plumage and a long, pale bill. This resident adorning our mountain retreat is a captivating sight, and for bird watchers, a true delight.

A Forest Acrobat

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Xiphorhynchus flavigaster) belongs to the Dendrocolaptinae subfamily, which includes a fascinating group of woodcreepers. Unlike its oven-building cousins, the ivory-billed woodpecker is a master climber, skillfully navigating the vertical world of towering trees.

Its strong legs, with two toes pointing forward and two backward, provide an exceptional grip as it runs along trunks and branches. Its long, slightly curved bill acts as a probe, perfect for extracting insects and other invertebrates hidden beneath the bark and in crevices.

Striking Yet Subtle

At first glance, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker may seem all stripes and spots. But a closer look reveals a beautiful pattern. Its upper parts are a tapestry of black and beige stripes, with a prominent white eyebrow adding a touch of contrast. The underside is intricately striped with brown and white, creating a subtle camouflage against the dappled light filtering through the leaves.

The ivory bill, which gives it its name, is indeed pale, but not quite ivory-colored. It is light gray or horn-colored, adding a touch of elegance to its overall appearance.

A Patient Predator

Unlike the hyperactive Striped-billed Woodpecker, its close relative, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is a methodical hunter. It moves deliberately along tree trunks, carefully examining every nook and cranny. Its sharp eyes scan for hidden prey, and its long bill allows it to probe deeply into crevices and bromeliads, those fascinating rosettes of plants that grow on tree branches.

This patient approach ensures a steady supply of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates that make up its diet.

A Sight and Sound to Behold

While the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is not the most vocal bird, its calls are distinctive. A sharp, piercing «tsee» or «tsip» is its most common vocalization. You may also hear a rapid series of squeaky notes, especially when agitated or defending its territory.

Spotting an Ivory-billed Woodpecker requires patience and a keen eye. But the reward is a truly unforgettable spectacle: a glimpse into the remarkable world of Costa Rica’s avian wonders.

Keeping Our Forests Alive

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker thrives in healthy rainforests with a diversity of trees. At our mountain retreat, we are committed to sustainable practices that protect the very habitat these birds depend on.

By choosing eco-friendly practices and supporting conservation efforts, we can ensure that future generations continue to be amazed by the beauty of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and the countless other avian gems that call Costa Rica home.
