A Spotted Elf

This little wonder is truly charming, a ball of rufous feathers barely reaching 11.5 cm in length. Its crown features dull black feathers with a touch of brown at the tips, while its back transitions from dark olive-brown at the nape and shoulders to a deep chestnut on the lower back, rump, and tail. Look for the black bars adorning the tail, adding a touch of elegance to this miniature marvel.

A Surprising Face

But the true spectacle of the Gray-breasted Wood-Wren is its face. A long whitish-gray stripe runs above its eye, a bold contrast to the wide black stripe extending behind. Its cheeks, a captivating mix of black and pale gray stripes, frame its pale gray chin and throat. The chest, as its name suggests, is a beautiful gray that intensifies towards the belly. The sides and lower flanks display a charming dark beige, completing the exquisite plumage of this small bird.

A Voice Like a Melodic Roller Coaster

While the Gray-breasted Wood-Wren may be shy and elusive, flitting through the dense undergrowth of montane wet forests, its voice is anything but subtle. Its most recognizable call is a loud, scolding rattle, a sound that belies its tiny size. But listen closely, and you might be rewarded with a rich, whistled song, a melody with a playful, joyful cadence that sets it apart from other wren songs in the forest.
