The social flycatcher: Discovering the sociable tropical tyrant in the mountains of Costa Rica

Home / aves / The social flycatcher: Discovering the sociable tropical tyrant in the mountains of Costa Rica

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, amidst the green embrace of the rainforest canopy, flutters a bird as lively as its name: the social flycatcher. This small songbird, a member of the tyrant flycatcher family, is a regular visitor for our guests here at the retreat. It flits among the trees and serenades in the mornings with its cheerful melodies.

A splash of color in the green embrace

The social flycatcher is a small bird, measuring just 16 to 18 centimeters in length. Despite its tiny size, it has plenty of character in appearance. Adults are adorned with olive-brown upper parts, which contrast beautifully with their bright yellow underparts. A crisp white stripe encircles its eye, adding a touch of elegance. But the real star is hidden: an intense orange to vermilion crown stripe that appears when the bird is excited.

A bird of a thousand voices

While the social flycatcher is small, its voice is not at all. These birds live up to their name, and their presence is often announced by a chorus of loud calls. Their repertoire includes a piercing «peeurrr» and a delightful dawn song described as a «chips-k’-cheery.» For early risers, these morning serenades are a charming way to start a day immersed in nature.

A family affair

Social flycatchers live up to their name as very sociable birds. They are often seen in pairs or small groups, flitting among branches and perched visibly on exposed twigs. Their gregarious nature also extends to their nesting habits. They build large dome-shaped nests from grasses, twigs, and even bits of artificial debris, often placing them near beehives or ant colonies for added protection.

A bird with many skills

The social flycatcher is an expert insectivore, skillfully hunting from perches and using various techniques to catch its prey. It can glide in the air to collect insects from leaves or make short sorties to capture them in flight. But its diet is not limited to insects. These versatile birds also enjoy a good portion of fruits and berries, making them a valuable seed disperser in the rainforest ecosystem.

Observing the social flycatcher

The social flycatcher is a regular resident throughout Costa Rica, particularly common in semi-open areas with trees, like those surrounding our mountain retreat. So keep your eyes peeled as you explore the trails or relax on your balcony. You might spot this little ball of energy flitting about, its vibrant colors lighting up the emerald landscape, its cheerful song mingling with the symphony of the Costa Rican rainforest.

Beyond the mountains: a regular resident

While the social flycatcher is a regular visitor in the mountains, its range extends far beyond. It is found throughout much of the Americas, from Mexico and Central America to much of northern South America. So even if you don’t visit our mountain retreat, there are plenty of chances to encounter this charming bird on your travels through Costa Rica.

We hope this brief introduction has made you eager to meet the social flycatcher. As you explore the wonders of Costa Rica, keep an eye out for this vibrant songbird, a true ambassador of the social and melodic spirit of the rainforest.
