A Small Titan of the Sky
With a modest size of 15 cm (5.9 inches) and weighing just 35 grams (1.2 ounces), the White-chested Swift is a marvel of efficiency. Its streamlined body, long pointed wings, and deeply forked tail are perfectly adapted for a life soaring through the skies.
A Flash of Contrast
While these swifts spend most of their time in flight, a closer look reveals surprisingly elegant plumage. Their dark brown crown and cheeks create a dramatic contrast with the bright white of their chest and a short white stripe above the eye. Their back and rump are a deep blackish-brown, extending to slightly darker wings and tail. The underside is a lighter version of their back, with the underwing feathers notably lighter than the upper part.
A Resident You Can Find (Almost) Anywhere
Unlike some of Costa Rica’s more elusive birds, the White-chested Swift is a widespread resident. You might see them flying over the mountains surrounding our retreat, but their range extends from Mexico south through Central America and into South America, reaching Peru and east to Suriname. They are comfortable at a wide range of altitudes, from lowlands to the cool 3,000 meters (9,842 feet).
