A Crown Fit for Royalty

The male Long-billed Hermit is a sight to behold. Its head is adorned with a brilliant crown of captivating light blue, like a fragment of the Costa Rican sky crystallized in a feather. This crown contrasts sharply with its dark upper parts, creating a dramatic bicolor effect.

A Throat that Rivals the Stars

But the true star is found in the male’s throat. Here, a patch of feathers transforms into a radiant beacon of magenta-purple, catching the sunlight and shimmering like a constellation come to life. This iridescent patch, aptly called a «brilliant gorget,» is what gives this hummingbird its unforgettable name.

Living Up to Its Long Bill

As its name suggests, the Long-billed Hermit possesses an impressive bill. This long, slender instrument is perfectly adapted to reach deep into flowers and extract their nectar, the hummingbird’s primary food source. The length of the bill, along with its hovering ability, allows the Long-billed Hermit to access nectar-rich flowers that other hummingbirds might struggle to reach.

A Master of the Canopy

Unlike some hummingbirds that frequent gardens and backyards, the Long-billed Hermit prefers the elevated realm of the forest canopy. Here, among the leaves and branches, it flits and darts with incredible agility, its wings beating so fast they become a blur. This hummingbird is a true aerial acrobat, performing dazzling maneuvers as it seeks its sustenance.

A Glimpse of Paradise

While the Long-billed Hermit is not the most common hummingbird you might encounter in Costa Rica, spotting it during your stay at our mountain retreat is a truly magical experience. It is a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that thrives in our lush rainforests and a testament to the beauty that surrounds us.

Keep your eyes peeled for this shimmering jewel of the Costa Rican mountains. The Long-billed Hermit could be the highlight of your birdwatching adventure!
