High in the mountains of Costa Rica, our retreat offers a sanctuary not only for humans seeking peace but also for a vibrant tapestry of birds. Today, we focus our binoculars on a small and charming visitor, the Prairie Warbler. While not as common as some of its Costa Rican resident cousins, this lively songbird brightens our mountain slopes during its winter migration, adding a touch of sunshine with its bright plumage and cheerful song.

A Splendor of Yellow and Olive

The Prairie Warbler, a member of the American Parulidae family, is a small bird that generally measures around 13 cm in length. The males are the true stars, sporting a dazzling combination of colors. Their back is a beautiful olive green, often with subtle reddish streaks, while their chest bursts into a vivid yellow. Look closely and you’ll see dark stripes adorning their flanks, adding a touch of definition. A unique facial pattern completes the picture: a bright yellow line above the eye contrasted by a bold black stripe running through it, ending with another touch of yellow below.

Females and Juveniles: A More Subtle Beauty

The females and juveniles of the Prairie Warbler do not share the same striking attire as the males. Their plumage is generally more muted, with the olive green of their back lacking the reddish streaks and the yellow of their underside less intense. However, their beauty lies in their subtlety, and their plumage still offers a delightful harmony of colors.

A Song with Two Melodies

The Prairie Warbler is not just a visual delight; it is also a talented songbird. These little musicians have two distinct types of songs, each with its own character. Their «Type A» song is a series of ascending buzzing notes, perfect for a serene morning serenade. In contrast, their «Type B» song is a more sober affair, with a lower tone and fewer, longer whistled notes, often interspersed with some buzzing. Scientists believe these different songs are used in specific contexts, with Type A songs used for territorial defense and Type B songs to attract mates.

A Winter Visitor

The Prairie Warbler is a summer resident in the eastern parts of North America, breeding in open habitats like prairies and scrublands. However, when winter arrives, they head south in search of warmer climates. While not as abundant as in other parts of Central America, particularly the Caribbean lowlands, some Prairie Warblers choose the mountainous slopes of Costa Rica as their winter refuge. This means that during the colder months in North America, you might be lucky enough to see a flash of yellow flitting among the trees of our mountain retreat.

In Search of the Prairie Warbler

If you wish to add the Prairie Warbler to your bird list during your stay at our retreat, keep an eye on shrub areas, especially near forest edges. These small insectivores spend their days flitting about, gathering insects and spiders from leaves and branches. Their long tail often bobs up and down as they feed, making them easier to spot among the vegetation.

With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this charming songbird. And who knows, its cheerful melody might become the soundtrack to your serene mountain escape.
