A Distinguished Bird
The Red-rumped Cacique (Cacicus uropygialis) is a medium-sized songbird, measuring about 23 cm (9 inches) for males and slightly smaller for females. Its defining feature is, of course, the bright red patch on the lower back and upper rump. This flash of red becomes particularly prominent during flight, making the cacique a captivating sight as it flits through the dense foliage.
But red is not the only splash of color. The Red-rumped Cacique sports sleek black plumage that glistens under the dappled light filtering through the rainforest canopy. Its eyes are a vivid and captivating blue, adding another layer of intrigue to its appearance. The long, pointed bill is a pale yellow, perfectly complementing the overall color palette.
Sexual Dimorphism at Play
Like many birds in the Icteridae family, the Red-rumped Cacique exhibits sexual dimorphism. While both sexes share the same basic black plumage and red rump, males tend to be larger and have a deeper, more lustrous black. Females, on the other hand, are smaller and their black feathers have a duller sheen. Even juvenile caciques are distinct, with a brownish tint to their plumage and an orange-brown rump patch before fully maturing into their black and red glory.
Una Vida en los Árboles
The Red-rumped Cacique is a true inhabitant of the rainforest canopy. You’ll find them flitting about the highest parts of the trees, often in small flocks. They are agile flyers, adept at maneuvering through dense foliage. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, insects, and nectar, making them valuable pollinators as they flit from flower to flower.
A Song of the Rainforest
The Red-rumped Cacique is not just a visual treat; it is also a talented vocalist. Its song is a complex and varied series of whistles, clicks, and chirps, often described as loud and harsh. While not necessarily melodious to the human ear, their calls play a vital role in communication within their social groups.
