This small marvel, endemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama, is a captivating sight. Unlike its close relative, the Green-naped Tanager, the Chestnut-bellied Tanager boasts truly unique plumage.

A Kaleidoscope of Colors

Imagine a bird dipped in an artist’s palette. The Chestnut-bellied Tanager is a masterpiece of contrasting colors. Its head, upper parts, and chest are an elegant black, offset by an electrifying touch of cobalt blue that coats its chest, flanks, and neck. A hidden patch of chestnut crowns its head, adding a touch of warmth.

But the true stars of the show are the sequins: iridescent turquoise specks adorning its cheeks, nape, and even the edges of its wings and tail. As this little acrobat glides through the dim light, these sequins catch the light, transforming it into a fleeting display of brilliant turquoise.

Un Habitante del Bosque

The Chestnut-bellied Tanager is a creature of the highlands, preferring the coolness of cloud forests between 1,200 and 3,000 meters above sea level. Here, it thrives in the dense canopy, flying among branches adorned with bromeliads and other epiphytes. It’s not uncommon to see it in semi-open areas as well, such as clearings with trees, secondary forests, and even along forest edges.

A Social Butterfly (Almost)

While they don’t form large flocks, Chestnut-bellied Tanagers are often seen in pairs, flitting through the forest alongside mixed feeding groups. These groups, composed of various bird species, work together to efficiently gather insects and fruits from the trees.

The Chestnut-bellied Tanager, however, is primarily a frugivore. Its diet consists of a variety of berries and small fruits found in the forest canopy.

A Glimpse of Paradise

If you’re lucky enough to spend your retreat in our mountain sanctuary, keep an eye out for this dazzling little bird. The Chestnut-bellied Tanager is a true emblem of the biodiversity thriving in Costa Rica’s highlands.

So, the next time you find yourself amidst the fresh mountain air, listen for the chips and high notes, a whisper amidst the forest symphony. With a bit of patience, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this resplendent avian treasure.
