As twilight descends over our Costa Rican mountain retreat, a chorus of nocturnal creatures awakens. Among them, the Pacific screech owl, a resident shrouded in mystery, begins its nightly patrol. Here, in its secluded sanctuary nestled among the peaks, you have the unique opportunity to encounter this little-known predator.

The Pacific screech owl, with its scientific name Megascops cooperi, may be compact, but it has a big personality. This medium-sized owl, reaching just 23 to 25 centimeters in length, boasts prominent ear tufts that stand tall on its head. Don’t be fooled by its cuteness: those bright yellow eyes harbor a keen focus, perfectly adapted for hunting under the cover of darkness.

While you may be familiar with the classic hoot of owls, the Pacific screech owl has a different vocal repertoire. Keen ears might catch its sharp two-tone whistle, a sound often described as a «double screech.» This piercing call is how the owl communicates with potential mates and defends its territory.

Speaking of territory, the Pacific screech owl is a resident of the Pacific slopes of Central America, specifically from southern Mexico to Costa Rica. Here, in our mountain retreat, you can find this owl in a variety of habitats. It prefers semi-open areas with scattered trees, making our foothills with their pockets of vegetation and clearings a perfect home. Interestingly, the Pacific screech owl can also be found in mangroves, giant cardon cactus forests, and even near lakeside fields.

A true predator of the night, the Pacific screech owl hunts a variety of prey. Insects, lizards, small mammals, and even scorpions fall victim to its sharp talons. With its excellent eyesight and silent flight, the owl swoops down on unsuspecting prey, making it a vital part of the local ecosystem.

As elusive as it is fascinating, the Pacific screech owl is rarely seen during the day. However, with a bit of patience and a guided night walk by our expert naturalists, you might catch a glimpse of this shy hunter perched on a branch, its silhouette outlined against the moonlit sky.

In our Costa Rican retreat, we offer you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the natural world. With comfortable accommodations nestled among whispering pines and expert guides to lead you, you can witness firsthand the Pacific screech owl and countless other avian marvels. So come, listen to the secrets of the night, and let us unveil the magic of the Costa Rican rainforest, one nocturnal creature at a time.
