A Master of the Skies

The Short-tailed Swift, also known as the Cayenne Swift (Panyptila cayennensis), is a true marvel of avian engineering. Its body is sleek and compact, perfectly designed to cut through the air. Razor-sharp wings, incredibly narrow and improbably long, propel it with exceptional speed and maneuverability. But the star of the show is undoubtedly its tail. Deeply forked and elongated, it resembles a swallow’s tail, hence its name. However, unlike swallows, the Short-tailed Swift keeps it carefully closed in flight, transforming it into a pointed extension.

This unique tail design, along with its aerodynamic body and powerful wings, allows the Short-tailed Swift to perform impressive aerial stunts. It can effortlessly buzz, accelerate, and dive through the rainforest canopy, chasing insects at dizzying speeds. Watching a flock of these swifts dance in the sky is a fascinating experience, a testament to the wonders of avian evolution.

Spotting a Little Dancer

While these swifts are found throughout Costa Rica, from lowlands to mountains (including the sky above our retreat!), they are most frequently seen in humid tropical regions. Keep your eyes peeled to see them flying low over the forest canopy, often in pairs. They may also venture over open areas, lakes, and rivers, always in search of their next aerial meal.

Look for these telltale signs to identify a Short-tailed Swift:

  • Small size: They are relatively small birds, measuring only about 13 cm in length.
  • Black and white contrast: Their body is a deep, glossy black, while their throat sports a bright white patch that stands out sharply.
  • Swallow-tail wonder: As mentioned earlier, the deeply forked tail kept closed in flight is a key identification feature.
  • Fast and agile: Their flight is fast and erratic, making them a challenge to follow but a delight to watch.

A Life Spent in the Heights

The Short-tailed Swift is a true creature of the sky. It spends most of its life in the air, catching insects on the wing and even sleeping in flight. It builds small cup-shaped nests on cliffs or under buildings, using its saliva to glue plant fibers and feathers. Interestingly, both parents take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.

A Glimpse into the Symphony of the Tropical Forest

The Short-tailed Swift may be a small wonder, but its presence adds a vital note to the symphony of life in the Costa Rican tropical forest. Its constant aerial ballet not only controls insect populations but also serves as a visual reminder of the incredible diversity and adaptations found in the natural world.

So, the next time you’re gazing at the vast Costa Rican sky, keep an eye out for the Short-tailed Swift. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might spot this dazzling aerial artist, adding an unforgettable memory to your Costa Rican retreat experience.
