A Striking Shorebird
Imagine a bird with bold black and white plumage, a long, bright orange beak that curves dramatically downwards, and bright yellow eyes. That’s the American Oystercatcher! This unmistakable shorebird is a common sight on Costa Rica’s coastlines, particularly along the northern Pacific shores and the Gulf of Nicoya.
Standing at around 17-20 inches tall, these birds are quite large for shorebirds. Their black head and breast contrast sharply with their white underparts and greyish-black back and wings. In flight, a flash of white from the inner wings adds another layer of visual interest.
Masters of Mollusk Cuisine
The American Oystercatcher’s diet is a clue to its name. They’re specialized feeders, almost exclusively targeting shellfish like oysters, clams, and mussels. Their powerful, orange beak isn’t just for show – it’s a crucial tool for their unique feeding technique.
Oystercatchers have two main strategies for conquering their prey. For some shellfish, they use their beak like a wedge, inserting it between the slightly open valves and prying them apart. For others, they employ a hammering technique, repeatedly striking the shell in a specific location until it cracks.
Watching an oystercatcher work its magic is a testament to both its specialized anatomy and its remarkable persistence.
A Coastal Gem
The American Oystercatcher prefers undisturbed coastlines with sandy beaches, tidal flats, salt marshes, and rocky shores where their preferred prey abounds. While primarily found along the Pacific side of Costa Rica, smaller populations can also be seen on the Caribbean coast.
