A Rare Visitor from the Southern Seas: The Dominican Gull in Costa Rica

Home / aves / A Rare Visitor from the Southern Seas: The Dominican Gull in Costa Rica

High up in our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, the symphony of bird songs is a constant companion. But even for the most avid birdwatchers, there’s always the chance of an unexpected melody: an unusual visitor fluttering through our pristine ecosystems. Today, we focus our binoculars skyward in search of the Dominican Gull, a fascinating traveler from the southern hemisphere.

The Dominican Gull (Larus dominicanus) is a charismatic bird, with a wingspan that can reach an impressive 1.5 meters. Its plumage is a study in contrasts: a sleek white body offset by jet-black wing tips and a similarly dark mantle (the area between the wings and back). A bright yellow beak and greenish-yellow legs complete the picture.

While primarily a bird of the southern hemisphere, with populations concentrated around South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, the Dominican Gull is an occasional wanderer. In Costa Rica, it is considered an extreme rarity. Only two sightings have been documented, both on the Caribbean coast, far from our mountain retreat.

So, what would make a Dominican Gull travel so far north? Experts believe that strong winds or following fishing boats might be the culprits, inadvertently carrying these seabirds away from their usual habitats.

If you find yourself on the Caribbean coast and spot a large gull with the distinctive markings mentioned above, congratulations! You’ve just witnessed a remarkable avian visitor.

However, for most of our guests at the retreat, the Dominican Gull will remain a fascinating footnote in Costa Rica’s rich birdlife. But don’t worry! Our mountain location offers plenty of its own avian wonders. Keep an eye out for the resplendent Resplendent Quetzal, the elusive Emerald Toucanet, or the graceful Slate-colored Trogon.

Even if the Dominican Gull eludes you, Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity promises an unforgettable birdwatching experience. So, ready your binoculars, tune your ears, and prepare to be enchanted by the chorus of the Costa Rican mountains.
