Home / aves / A Jewel in the Mountains: The Stunning Violet-Eared Hummingbird

Even among the vibrant tapestry of birds that Costa Rica boasts, the Violet-ear Hummingbird (Colibri thalassinus) stands out as a dazzling jewel. This medium-sized hummingbird not only impresses with the speed of its wings and its aerial acrobatics. Its plumage is a fascinating combination of iridescent emerald green and captivating violet touches, making it a true spectacle to behold.

While not endemic to Costa Rica, the Violet-ear finds a comfortable home in the highlands, particularly in pine and oak forests and their edges. Here, in our mountain retreat nestled amid these very forests, you will have a fantastic opportunity to observe this small wonder.

A Flash of Green and Violet

The splendor of the Violet-ear lies in its contrasting colors. Its entire upper body, from head to tail, shines with an almost metallic emerald green. This is accented by a dark, wide band at the tip of its tail, adding a touch of definition. But the true stars of the show are the Violet-ear’s namesake features: the violet patches.

These patches adorn the sides of the bird’s neck, just behind the head, and seem to glow in the sun. The effect is mesmerizing, as if a small amethyst had been embedded on each side. The throat and chest continue the green theme, but with a more subtle and bright quality compared to the vibrant upper body. The belly completes the color palette with a bright, shimmering green.

A Singer Among the Trees

The Violet-ear is not only a visual delight, but also an accomplished singer. As it flits among the flowers or perches on an exposed twig high in a tree, it emits its song with tireless enthusiasm. This song is a series of metallic, staccato notes, and while not particularly melodious, it has a certain charm and adds to the overall vitality that the Violet-ear brings to the forest.

Encontrando a su Amigo Emplumado

The Violet-ear is most often seen in vegetation-covered clearings and along paths bordered by dense flower beds. These areas provide both the cover it prefers and the nectar-rich flowers it depends on for sustenance.

Keeping Eyes Open

Since they prefer to remain hidden within the flowers while feeding, spotting a Violet-ear may require patience. However, their bright colors and persistent song make them easier to locate once you know what to look and listen for.

Here are some tips for observing these dazzling hummingbirds:

  • Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal times to see them flitting among the flowers.
  • Listen for their song. The metallic, staccato notes give away their presence.
  • Look for flashes of green among the flowers, especially in areas with abundant blooms.
  • Bring binoculars to closely observe their impressive plumage.

With a bit of patience and these tips in hand, you’ll be on your way to witnessing the magic of the Violet-ear Hummingbird. And what better place to do so than from the tranquility of our mountain retreat, surrounded by the stunning beauty of Costa Rica’s highlands? We look forward to welcoming you and helping you discover the wonders of the Violet-ear and the countless other avian jewels our country has to offer.
