A Glimpse of Movement on the Coast: The Cinnamon Sandpiper on the Beaches of Costa Rica

Home / aves / A Glimpse of Movement on the Coast: The Cinnamon Sandpiper on the Beaches of Costa Rica

Here, in our mountain retreat nestled in the emerald embrace of Costa Rica’s highlands, the symphony of bird song takes center stage. But venture beyond our lush paradise, and the avian melody changes tone. Today, we set our sights on the sandy shores, where a captivating little acrobat, the Sanderling, takes flight.

Sanderlings embody the spirit of travel. These small, sturdy shorebirds embark on epic journeys, breeding in the high Arctic tundra and migrating to the warm embrace of Costa Rica’s beaches during the winter months. While not regular residents, they adorn our Pacific and Caribbean coasts from September to May, transforming the shore into their temporary haven.

Spotting a Sanderling is a delightful experience. Imagine a flash of pale sand-colored feathers, accented by a dark breast in breeding plumage, fluttering along the water’s edge. Their short, dark legs propel them in a blur of motion as they chase the retreating waves, their black beak probing the exposed sand for a tasty treat.

Their technique is fascinating. Sanderlings employ a unique feeding method called «pecking.» As the wave recedes, they run along the shore, their keen eyes scanning the exposed sand for tiny crustaceans, mollusks, and marine worms. With lightning-fast reflexes, they peck at these morsels before the next wave swallows the shore. It’s a constant dance with the tide, a testament to their remarkable adaptation to their coastal environment.

Sanderlings are social creatures, often gathering in large flocks. Watching them scurry along the beach in unison, their synchronized movements creating a fascinating wave of motion, is a sight to behold. Their calls, a series of high-pitched whistles and trills, add to the vibrant symphony of the coast.

While the Sanderling may not grace us with its presence year-round in our mountain retreat, a visit to Costa Rica’s stunning coast during their migration season is an opportunity to witness a true marvel of the avian world. So, the next time you find yourself on a Costa Rican beach, keep your eyes peeled for these energetic shorebirds. With a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of the Sanderling, a small testament to the wonders of migration and the beauty of Costa Rica’s diverse ecosystems.
