While not as extravagantly colorful as some of its cousins, the White-bellied Hummingbird possesses a beauty of quiet elegance. Let’s delve into the world of this captivating creature.
Brilliant Green with a White Surprise
The White-bellied Hummingbird is a medium-sized gem, typically reaching lengths of about 10 cm. Its defining feature is undoubtedly its plumage. Imagine a coat of brilliant green, catching the sunlight and transforming into an emerald dream. This green extends across the bird’s back, wings (which appear more brown upon closer inspection), and even its head.
But then comes the surprise: the belly! In stark contrast to the green upper parts, the White-bellied Hummingbird lives up to its name by displaying a dazzling white belly. This sharp delineation creates an impressive visual, making the bird instantly recognizable.
A Solitary Soul in the Secondary Forest
Unlike some hummingbirds that flit about in social groups, the White-bellied Hummingbird prefers a more solitary existence. You will find them inhabiting the edges of open forests, particularly in areas with secondary vegetation.
