Here at our mountain retreat, nestled in the lush greenery of Costa Rica, we are surrounded by a symphony of bird songs. From the vibrant calls of toucans to the melodic whistles of wrens, our retreat is a paradise for bird watchers. Today, we turn our binoculars to a more subtle resident, the aptly named White-winged Dove.

The White-winged Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) is a plump, pale, and somewhat shy member of the dove family. Unlike its flashy relatives, the White-winged Dove possesses a more subdued elegance. Its feathers are a pale pink with a touch of gray on the head and chest. The white-tipped outer tail feathers are the key identification feature, though you may need a good look to appreciate them.

These doves are widespread throughout Central and South America, with a range extending from Texas to Argentina. In Costa Rica, you will find them adorning the foothills and mountains, preferring open areas with scattered trees and shrubs. While they may occasionally visit bird feeders, they are generally ground-dwelling birds that prefer to forage for seeds and fallen fruits on the forest floor.

Hábitat:

The White-winged Dove thrives in a variety of wooded habitats. They are particularly fond of disturbed or scrubby areas, so you are more likely to find them near our mountain retreat than in the heart of the rainforest. However, don’t be surprised if you see them fluttering through the understory of a mature forest as well.

Observing a White-winged Dove:

Due to their preference for the ground and their shy nature, spotting a White-winged Dove can be a challenge. They tend to stay hidden in the underbrush, venturing into the open only if startled. But their soft coo, a low “hoo-hoo-hoo,” can sometimes give away their presence.

Consejos para los observadores de aves:

If you are determined to see a White-winged Dove during your stay at our retreat, here are some tips:

  • Early morning and late afternoon: These doves are most active at these times, so plan your bird-watching walks accordingly.
  • Listen for the call: Be attentive to their low coo, which can help you locate them.
  • Scan the forest floor: As they spend most of their time on the ground, focus your gaze on the underbrush near clearings and forest edges.
  • Patience is key: As with any wildlife sighting, patience is crucial. Stay still, observe calmly, and avoid any sudden movements that might scare the doves away.

A glimpse of serenity:

While not as flashy as other birds in Costa Rica, the White-winged Dove offers a different kind of beauty. Its tranquil presence and soft coo add to the peaceful atmosphere of our mountain retreat. With a bit of patience and these helpful tips, you might be lucky enough to spot this elusive dove during your stay.
