A Shy Songster: The Gray-Chested Dove

Home / Birds of Costa Rica / A Shy Songster: The Gray-Chested Dove

High up in the Costa Rican mountains, where the air is crisp and the rainforest canopy filters the sunlight, you might catch a glimpse of a secretive dove – the Gray-chested Dove (Leptotila cassinii). This terrestrial bird prefers the quiet solitude of the forest floor, making it a favorite among birders with a keen eye for spotting elusive species.

A Master of Camouflage

The Gray-chested Dove is a master of blending in. Its plumage is a symphony of understated browns and grays. The crown and hindneck boast a warm brown hue, while the chest, the namesake feature, is a dusky grayish brown. This coloration allows it to disappear seamlessly amongst the forest undergrowth, offering excellent protection from predators.

A Glimpse of Red

For a pop of color, the Gray-chested Dove has a subtle yet distinctive reddish orbital skin around its eye. This subtle detail can be a helpful identifier when trying to differentiate it from similar dove species.

Listen for the Whistle

While spotting a Gray-chested Dove can be a challenge, their presence is often announced by their melodic whistle. This clear, two-toned whistle is a common sound in the early mornings and late afternoons, as these doves become more active during these cooler parts of the day.

A Ground-Dwelling Dove

Unlike some doves that spend most of their time perched in trees, the Gray-chested Dove prefers to walk on the forest floor. Here, they forage for fallen fruits, seeds, and insects, their small bills perfectly adapted for picking up these tasty morsels. Their terrestrial nature makes them more likely to be seen along shady paths or at the forest’s edge, where they venture out in search of food.

A Shy Neighbor at the Retreat

While the Gray-chested Dove is a resident of the mountainous regions surrounding our Costa Rican retreat, sightings can be infrequent due to their shy nature. But for the patient observer, a glimpse of this elusive dove is a rewarding experience. Keep your eyes peeled on the forest floor during your early morning walks, and you might just be lucky enough to spot this little ball of feathers flitting amongst the undergrowth.
