A Long-Distance Master
The American Golden Plover is a champion of long-distance travel. Twice a year, these medium-sized shorebirds embark on a circular migratory route that spans an astonishing 32,000 kilometers. They breed in the Arctic tundra of Alaska and Canada, then fly south for the winter, reaching as far as Argentina and Chile. Costa Rica lies right on their migratory path, offering a vital stopover point for rest and refueling.
Spotting a Golden Jewel
These birds are most likely to be seen in Costa Rica during the fall migration, between September and November. Look for them in open areas such as pastures, plowed fields, or even along the coast if they are near their wintering grounds.
Identifying an American Golden Plover can be a delightful challenge. In their breeding plumage, they are a sight to behold. Males sport a magnificent black and white tuxedo, accented by a mesmerizing golden-spotted back. Females are similar but with less black.
However, during migration, they trade their striking outfits for a more subdued look. They become generally grayish-brown with a distinctive white eyebrow and a darker crown. Their slender body, long pointed wings, and short blunt tail are key features to help distinguish them from other plovers.
A Glimpse into Their World
While here, American Golden Plovers are busy recharging energy to continue their journey. They feed in the classic plover manner, running short distances and abruptly stopping to probe the ground with their beak for insects, worms, and other small invertebrates.
