High in the canopy of the Costa Rican rainforest, a flash of bright yellow might catch your eye. It’s not a flower basking in the dappled light, but the Yellow Tyrannulet, a tiny songbird with a vibrant personality.

The Yellow Tyrannulet, classified as Capsiempis flaveola, may be small, but it packs a punch in cuteness. At only 10.5 to 11.4 cm long and weighing just 8 grams, this little bird is a true featherweight. Its slim silhouette and short bill give it an almost delicate appearance, perhaps resembling a vireo or a miniature warbler to the untrained eye.
But don’t be fooled by its size! The Yellow Tyrannulet is a master of its leafy domain. Its upper parts are a beautiful olive green, providing excellent camouflage among the rainforest foliage. The star of the show, however, is the unmistakable sun-yellow that covers its underparts. This vibrant hue makes it a standout among the more muted tones of the rainforest understory.
For added charm, whitish or pale yellow eyebrows add a touch of allure, like delicate brows framing the bird’s eyes. The wings and tail are a dark brown, subtly edged with yellow feathers, and sport two distinct yellowish wing bars. Interestingly, there is little difference in plumage between the sexes, although young birds tend to be browner above and a paler shade of yellow below.
A Melodious Duo
The Yellow Tyrannulet is not just a pretty face; it’s also a talented singer. Its call is a simple, charming “pewik,” but where it truly excels is in its duet singing. This synchronized performance consists of a rhythmic “pi-tic-kik” that echoes through the forest, a delightful melody sure to capture your attention.
It’s important to note that there are geographical variations in the appearance and vocalizations of the Yellow Tyrannulet. So, the birds you encounter here in our Costa Rican retreat might have slightly different features or songs than their cousins from other parts of the country. This local variation adds another layer of intrigue to this fascinating little creature.
Une Vie Parmi les Feuilles
The Yellow Tyrannulet is a true rainforest dweller, preferring the upper parts of the forest canopy. Here, it flits among the branches and tangles of vines, a master of acrobatics as it hunts its favorite food: insects. With a keen eye and a lightning-fast bill, the Yellow Tyrannulet gleans insects from leaves and the understory, playing a vital role in maintaining the health of the rainforest ecosystem.
While you may not see them every day, due to their preference for the upper canopy, keep your eyes peeled during your retreat explorations. With a bit of patience and a good dose of luck, you might spot this vibrant singer flitting among the leaves, a tiny burst of sunshine amidst the emerald embrace of the Costa Rican rainforest.
