La Chevêchette non tachée : Un minuscule chasseur des forêts nuageuses

Home / Oiseaux / La Chevêchette non tachée : Un minuscule chasseur des forêts nuageuses

In our mountain retreat, nestled in the heart of Costa Rica’s cloud forests, the symphony of bird songs is a constant companion. But among the familiar chorus, there is a more subtle tune, a whisper in the wind – the song of the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl.

This small mountain dweller is a true marvel. Measuring only 17 to 20 cm tall, it is one of the smallest owl species in Central America. Unlike its spotted cousins, the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl lives up to its name, sporting a deep sepia brown coat on the upper parts, throat, and upper chest. The lower chest and belly offer a delightful contrast in warm tawny, giving it an almost two-toned appearance in the forest’s dim light.

Its facial disk, framed by a narrow white border, hosts large piercing yellow eyes that seem to pierce the twilight. Tiny white « eyebrows » and a whitish chin complete this expressive face.

But don’t be fooled by its adorable appearance. The Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is a formidable nocturnal predator. At dusk, it emerges from its daytime roost – often an abandoned woodpecker hole – to silently hunt insects, small lizards, and even rodents. Its sharp beak and powerful talons make it a master of the night, capable of catching its prey by surprise.

Although not as common as some other birds in Costa Rica, the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl can be encountered at the highest altitudes of our mountain range, particularly in paramo and elfin forest areas. These cloud-embraced ecosystems, with their stunted trees and dense vegetation, provide the ideal habitat for this elusive hunter.

Hearing its enchanting call – a series of evenly spaced whistles or a feline-like meow – resonating in the silence of the night is a truly magical experience. It’s a reminder that even in the quiet corners of the forest, life thrives in fascinating forms.

Tips for spotting the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl:

  • Night is key: As a nocturnal bird, your best chances of encountering an Unspotted Saw-whet Owl are after dusk.
  • Listen for its call: Keep an ear out for the owl’s characteristic whistles or meows.
  • Head to higher altitudes: Head to the cloud forests of the mountains for a better chance of spotting this discreet little owl.
  • Guided night tours: Consider joining a guided night tour led by experienced naturalists who know the best spots and calls to listen for.

By following these tips and keeping your eyes open (and ears wide open!), you might have the chance to spot this remarkable little owl. And if you do, it’s a memory that will stay with you long after your retreat to Costa Rica.
