A master of the skies

The Gray-rumped Swift (Chaetura cinereiventris) lives up to its name. Designed for aerial life, it has a sleek, streamlined body, a short, square tail, and long, scimitar-shaped wings that bulge in the middle. This aerodynamic marvel allows the Gray-rumped Swift to perform incredible feats of agility. Watch in awe as it swoops, dives, and twirls effortlessly through the air, catching insects mid-flight with its wide beak.

A gray and black streak

The plumage of the Gray-rumped Swift is a study in contrasts. Shiny black feathers cover its upper parts, except for a distinctive gray rump and upper tail coverts, giving the bird its name. The underside is a lighter gray, creating a beautiful two-tone effect. Males and females share this coloration, making them indistinguishable to the untrained eye.

A vocal acrobat (sometimes)

While the Gray-rumped Swift spends most of its time in silent flight, it does have a vocal repertoire. Near nesting sites, you might hear a guttural “churr,” a sound used for communication between partners. Listen closely, as these vocalizations offer a rare glimpse into the social life of these fascinating creatures.

A creature of the mountains (and beyond)

The Gray-rumped Swift is a common resident of Costa Rica’s highlands, including the mountain range that graces our retreat. You’re most likely to spot them gliding above the treetops, especially along ridges and open areas. However, their range extends far beyond our mountains. These aerial nomads are found throughout Central and South America, inhabiting a variety of habitats from forests and mountains to open fields and even urban areas.

Ambassadors of the invisible world

The Gray-rumped Swift plays a vital role in the ecosystem. Its acrobatic pursuits target a variety of flying insects, helping to control their populations. By keeping insect numbers in check, it ensures the health of forests and the overall balance of nature.

A glimpse of the extraordinary

Even if you can’t have a conversation with the Gray-rumped Swift, its aerial mastery is a sight to behold. Witnessing its graceful maneuvers against the backdrop of our mountain paradise will give you a newfound appreciation for the extraordinary lives that flit across the Costa Rican sky. So, keep your eyes open, and you might just catch a glimpse of this magnificent feathered acrobat gracing the sky above your retreat.
