The olive-backed euphonia, a tiny songbird with dazzling plumage, is a common sight (and sound) for our guests who venture into the lush foothills. A finch by family, a fashionista by design
The olive-backed euphonia belongs to the finch family, a diverse group of seed-eating songbirds. But unlike its ground-dwelling finch cousins, the euphonia perches in trees, weaving through branches with acrobatic ease.
Here at the retreat, you’re likely to spot the olive-backed euphonia in small groups, their bright colors a beacon against the green backdrop. The males, true dandies of the species, sport a shiny olive-green back, a sunny yellow forehead, and a vivid rufous belly that seems perpetually puffed with pride.
The females, though lacking the male’s bright sheen, are no less striking. Their olive upper parts are complemented by a warm chestnut forehead and a cheerful yellow underside with a hint of rufous. Juveniles resemble neither parent, opting for a more subdued outfit of dull olive with darker accents.
A life in the canopy
The olive-backed euphonia is a resident breeder in the lowlands and foothills of the Caribbean, making our mountain retreat the perfect spot to observe them. They frequent humid forests, secondary growth areas (forests recovering from disturbance), and even bushy clearings, thriving from sea level up to an altitude of 1000 meters.
Attentive observers might spot their cup-shaped nests, cleverly hidden among epiphytes (plants growing on other plants) or moss, at heights ranging from 2 to 11 meters above the ground. The nest, with its side entrance, cleverly conceals the precious cargo: a clutch of three white eggs marked with brown.
The diet of a singer
The olive-backed euphonia is a true gourmet of the skies. Its diet consists mainly of small fruits, making it a frequent visitor to fruit trees and shrubs. They are also known to occasionally indulge in flower nectar and insects, ensuring a balanced diet.
