High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the emerald embrace of the rainforest meets the vivid kiss of the clouds, flies a breathtaking marvel: the Blue-chested Hummingbird (Polyerata amabilis). For those fortunate enough to visit our secluded mountain retreat, a glimpse of this dazzling creature is a guaranteed highlight.

The Blue-chested Hummingbird is a true inhabitant of the cloud forest, nestled amidst the dappled light filtering through the leaves of towering trees. Although it is not the most brightly colored hummingbird in Costa Rica, it possesses a subtle elegance that sets it apart.

A Dazzling Distinction:

The male Blue-chested Hummingbird is a sight to behold. Its crown and back shimmer with iridescent green, capturing light like polished emeralds. But the star of the show is undoubtedly its throat. Here, a patch of feathers explodes in a hypnotic shimmer of blue-violet, a jewel nestled among the green.

The female, though lacking the male’s flamboyant throat, is no less beautiful. Her chest is adorned with a delicate pattern of speckles, each as fine as a grain of dust. Both males and females share a distinctive feature: a pink base to their lower mandible, a subtle detail that adds to their charm.

Life in Motion:

These tiny dynamos are wonders of energy. Their wings beat at an astonishing rate, a blur that allows them to hover in the air, extracting nectar from flowers with their long, slender beaks. They are territorial creatures, especially during times of nectar scarcity. Males establish feeding territories, fiercely defending them against rivals.

The breeding season offers a fascinating spectacle. Males gather in leks, aerial courts where they perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. Their wings buzz as they dive and dash, showcasing their vibrant plumage in a hypnotic dance.

A Forest Refuge:

The Blue-chested Hummingbird is a creature of the rainforest. It prefers the cool and humid cloud forests, particularly at the edges where sunlight filters through the canopy. Here, it finds the flowers that provide its sustenance and the foliage that offers shelter and nesting sites.

Although our mountain retreat is located in its preferred habitat, these little jewels can be surprisingly elusive. However, with a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might be rewarded with a fleeting glimpse of this dazzling hummingbird flitting through the forest.

Tips for Spotting the Blue-chested Hummingbird:

  • Early morning is the ideal time: These energetic birds are most active during the cooler hours of the day. Head out for a birdwatching session early in the morning to increase your chances of spotting them.
  • Listen for the hum: The rapid beating of their wings creates a distinctive hum. Keep your ears open as you explore the forest.
  • Focus on the forest edges: Look for the Blue-chested Hummingbird at the boundaries of the rainforest, where flowers are more abundant.
  • Bring binoculars: Their small size makes them difficult to see with the naked eye. A good pair of binoculars will allow you to appreciate their intricate details.

With a bit of effort and a touch of luck, you might encounter the Blue-chested Hummingbird during your stay at our mountain retreat. This dazzling denizen of the cloud forest is a testament to the beauty and wonders that await you in the heart of Costa Rica.
