A Mountain Jewel

The Star-throated Hummingbird with a United Cap belongs to the « mountain jewels » tribe of hummingbirds, named for their iridescent feathers that sparkle like gemstones. Measuring barely 11 to 13 cm, these tiny dynamos are marvels of flight. Their long, almost straight black beak allows them to probe deep into flowers, extracting nectar with their specialized brush-like tongue.

An Unforgettable Appearance

Males and females sport similar plumage, making them easy to identify for amateur birdwatchers. Their cap, as the name suggests, is a non-metallic green, beautifully contrasting with their metallic bronze-green upper parts. A touch of white on the rump adds another touch of elegance.

But the real highlight is the gorget – the throat patch that shimmers with vibrant shades of red. Depending on the light, it can appear fiery red, or a more subdued purplish red. This vibrant spot is particularly prominent in males, further enhanced by a broad white « moustache » extending from the base of the beak.

An Aerial Life

The Star-throated Hummingbirds with a United Cap are solitary birds, fiercely defending their feeding territory. Their wings beat at an incredible speed, allowing them to hover in the air while sipping nectar from flowers. They are particularly fond of Heliconia – lobster claw plants – whose curved flowers are perfectly suited to their long, slender beak.

A Mountain Retreat Awaits You
