A Green Signal with a Sunny Surprise

The Yellow-naped Amazon, also known as the Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata), is a medium-sized parrot, measuring about 35 cm long. Its main plumage is a stunning emerald green, a perfect camouflage amidst Costa Rica’s lush foliage. But its main feature adds a delightful splash of color – a bright yellow patch adorns the nape of its neck, adding a touch of sunshine to its appearance. Juveniles do not yet have this vibrant patch, but their overall green plumage makes them no less charming.

Listening to the Song of the Rainforest

Yellow-naped Amazons are social creatures, often seen flying in pairs or small flocks. Their calls are an integral part of Costa Rica’s soundscape. Early risers might have the chance to hear their melodic duets echoing through the forest as they greet the dawn. These vocal birds are also known for their ability to mimic sounds, a talent that can sometimes surprise unsuspecting visitors!

A Threatened Jewel

Unfortunately, the Yellow-naped Amazon population has suffered a significant decline in recent years. Habitat loss and the illegal pet trade have pushed this magnificent bird towards endangerment. At our retreat, we are committed to sustainable practices that protect the rainforest ecosystem and its inhabitants. By choosing to stay with us, you can be part of the solution, supporting conservation efforts and ensuring that future generations can experience the magic of encountering these emerald wonders.

Where to Spot the Yellow-naped Amazon

Once common, Yellow-naped Amazons are now primarily found in the drier Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica. They favor the canopy and edges of deciduous and gallery forests, sometimes venturing into open savannas dotted with trees.

Our mountain retreat, nestled in a protected area, offers a perfect habitat for these exceptional parrots. While sightings are not guaranteed due to their declining numbers, keeping an eye out for flashes of emerald green and listening for their melodic calls might just reward you with an unforgettable encounter.

More Than Just a Pretty Bird

Yellow-naped Amazons play a vital role in the rainforest ecosystem. Their diet consists of a wide variety of fruits and nuts, and as they feed, they help disperse seeds, promoting the growth of new trees. Their presence is an indicator of a healthy rainforest environment.

By protecting these remarkable birds, we ensure the continued health of the rainforest and all the wonders it holds. So, on your next visit to our retreat in Costa Rica, don’t forget to look up – you might just catch a glimpse of a dazzling emerald jewel with a sunny secret: the Yellow-naped Amazon.
