Home / Oiseaux / A Touch of Rust: The Fascinating Ruddy Climber

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the air is fresh and crisp, a reddish-brown flash catches your eye. It’s the Ruddy Treerunner, a captivating little bird flitting through the mossy branches of the cloud forest. Here, in our retreat nestled in the heart of this verdant tapestry, these feathered residents are a constant source of delight.

The Ruddy Treerunner, scientifically known as Margarornis rubiginosus, is a member of the Furnariidae family, closely related to the Ovenbirds. But unlike its oven-building cousins, the Ruddy Treerunner is a true explorer of the upper canopy.

A Rusty Robin with a Touch of Elegance

With a small size of 15-16 centimeters (about 6 inches), the Ruddy Treerunner is a compact bird with a surprisingly bold personality. Its most striking feature is undoubtedly its plumage. Adults sport a rich reddish-brown on the upper body, with a touch of russet chestnut on the wings and tail. This rusty hue is beautifully offset by a creamy white eyebrow and eye-ring, adding a touch of elegance to its otherwise earthy tones.

The sexes are remarkably similar, so distinguishing them can be a challenge for the untrained eye. However, their calls offer a helpful clue. The voice of the Ruddy Treerunner is a sharp « tsit, » often followed by a delightful trilling chirp, a melody that resonates in the mountain air.

A Master of the Mossy Maze

Unlike woodpeckers, which use their stiff tails as support to climb vertical trunks, the Ruddy Treerunner relies on its agile legs and claws to navigate the complex world of upper branches. It hops and crawls skillfully along the branches, its soft tail feathers trailing behind.

The preferred habitat of the Ruddy Treerunner is the mossy cloud forest, where it spends its days searching for a delicious feast of insects. It gleans spiders, their eggs, and larvae from the nooks and crannies of bromeliads, mosses, and other epiphytes adorning the towering trees.

These birds are territorial and can be quite noisy, especially during the breeding season. They build large, enclosed oval nests high in the canopy, often nestled under the protective cover of a thick branch. The nest itself is a marvel of camouflage, made from mosses and epiphytes, with a downward-facing entrance tunnel for added security.

A Birdwatching Adventure Awaits

If you are an avid birdwatcher or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world, the Ruddy Treerunner is a Costa Rican treasure waiting to be discovered. Here, in our mountain retreat, ideally located within the cloud forest, you will have plenty of opportunities to observe this vibrant bird flying among the emerald foliage.

So, keep your eyes wide open and your ears tuned! With a bit of patience and a dash of birdwatching knowledge, you might just be captivated by the charm of the Ruddy Treerunner.
