While the Tree Swallow is not a permanent resident of our mountain retreat, it brings a touch of vitality during its visits. Here’s a closer look at this fascinating feathered friend:

A Dazzling Duo

The Tree Swallow is a small songbird, measuring just 14 cm in length. Its bicolored plumage is stunning:

  • Males: They sport a brilliant iridescent blue back that shimmers in the sun. Their underside is a crisp white, creating a striking contrast.
  • Females: Similar to males, females have a duller blue hue, often greenish.

Both sexes have a small dark beak and a slightly forked tail that aids in their acrobatic maneuvers.

Une Vie en Mouvement

The Tree Swallow is a migratory bird that spends its summers breeding in North America and winters in Central and South America, including Costa Rica. Here in the mountains, you can expect to see them from early September to late October and again from March to April.

In Search of a Habitat

The Tree Swallow thrives in open areas with nearby water sources. Look for them flying over lakes, ponds, streams, and even pastures and savannas. They particularly favor areas with large trees, which they use for nesting.

Masters of the Sky

The Tree Swallow is a true aerial artist. It has long, narrow wings that allow it to perform incredible flying feats. It soars, glides, and dives with remarkable agility, catching insects mid-flight. Its calls, a sharp « cheet » or « chi-veet, » add to the symphony of the mountain retreat.

Nesting Habits

Tree Swallows nest in cavities. They typically use natural cavities in trees or abandoned woodpecker holes. In some cases, they readily adapt to artificial nest boxes, making them a welcome sight for birdwatchers who set up birdhouses.

A Glimpse of Nature’s Beauty

The Tree Swallow is a transient visitor to our mountain retreat, but its presence adds a touch of magic to the landscape. If you’re lucky enough to spot this magnificent blue bird twirling in the air, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the wonder of bird migration.

Keep an eye out for the Tree Swallow during your stay at the mountain retreat!
