High in the cool mountains of Costa Rica, nestled in the emerald embrace of the cloud forest, you might spot a bright yellow flash flitting between the branches. This is the Blackburnian Warbler, a small songbird that graces mountain retreats only during its migrations.

Although not native to Costa Rica, the Blackburnian Warbler is a fascinating visitor that beautifies our mountains with its presence in spring and autumn. Let’s dive into the world of this mysterious songbird!

A Dazzling Double Life

The Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga tigrina) shows a dramatic difference between its breeding plumage and winter attire. During the summer months in northern North America, the male Blackburnian Warbler dons a stunning outfit. Its back is a deep chestnut brown, beautifully contrasting with a bright yellow chest adorned with sharp black streaks. A vivid orange patch graces its cheek, adding a fiery touch to its appearance.

However, when this little traveler arrives in Costa Rica, its attire is much more subdued. Both males and females sport a gray-olive crown and back, with a paler yellow chest that still retains some light streaks. The orange cheek patch is replaced by a grayish spot, making them much less conspicuous.

A Life Among Spruces

The Blackburnian Warbler is a creature of the boreal forests, preferring the towering spruces of the North American taiga. Here, it flits among the branches, skillfully seeking insects and spiders hidden among the needles. Its sharp beak allows it to probe the crevices of the bark and extract hidden prey.

During their migration through Costa Rica, they tend to favor similar habitats. They are more frequently observed in mountainous regions, particularly in areas where spruces are planted, offering them a familiar environment.

A Surprising Sweet Tooth

One of the most interesting features of the Blackburnian Warbler is its unique tongue. Unlike most warblers, its tongue is specially adapted for a sweet tooth! It is curved and semi-tubular, allowing it to efficiently extract nectar from flowers. This adaptation proves useful during their migration when insects may be less abundant.

Un Trésor Passager

Spotting a Blackburnian Warbler in the mountains of Costa Rica is a delightful treat for birdwatchers. Its vibrant presence, even in its winter attire, adds a touch of exotic beauty to our cloud forests. While its stay may be brief, its journey through our mountains is a testament to the incredible adaptability and resilience of these remarkable little songbirds.
