High in the mountains of Costa Rica, nestled in the emerald embrace of the cloud forests, flies a small hunter with a vibrant secret. It is the Golden Tyrant, a resident that beautifies the mountains from southern Mexico to western Panama. Here, in our mountain refuge, you have the chance to observe this little bird with a big personality.

At only 12.5 cm tall, the Golden Tyrant is easy to miss. But its plumage offers a captivating spectacle. Its upper body is a beautiful olive green, a perfect camouflage against the lush foliage. Look closer, and you’ll see a hint of sunlight breaking through – its underparts sport a warm yellow, with a touch of ochre on the chest.
But the real eye-catcher is its face. The Golden Tyrant has a striking white eye-ring, which widens into a small triangle behind the eye, as if nature itself couldn’t resist adding a touch of elegance.
This little tyrant is not just about looks. It’s a tireless hunter flitting from perch to perch in the dense forest. Keep an eye out for its characteristic behavior – perched on a low or mid-level branch, it often flicks its tail upward in a quick, nervous motion. This could be your cue to look closer, as it’s likely about to launch into a daring aerial sortie to catch an unsuspecting insect in mid-flight.
While the Golden Tyrant can be found at all levels of the forest, it seems to particularly enjoy the edges. So, as you explore the trails around our refuge, take a moment to pay attention to the borders between towering trees and the underbrush. It’s there you might spot this little marvel, perched and alert, its head turning with curious jerks as it surveys its domain.
The song of the Golden Tyrant is another delightful discovery. Unlike its close relative, the migratory Yellow-bellied Tyrant you might see in the lowlands, the Golden Tyrant has a very high-pitched call and song. Listen for these short, emphatic phrases – a perfect complement to the bird’s energetic personality.
Even though the Golden Tyrant may not be the most conspicuous bird of the Costa Rican Highlands, its charm lies in its subtle beauty, active lifestyle, and unique vocalizations. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might just be captivated by this little hunter with a heart full of sunshine.
