The Energetic Burst of Color: The Gray Tyrannulet

Home / Oiseaux / The Energetic Burst of Color: The Gray Tyrannulet

High in the canopy, a flash of yellow catches your eye. It darts from branch to branch, a burst of sunshine against the emerald foliage. This is the Grey-capped Flycatcher, a charismatic flycatcher that graces the wetlands and lowland forests of Costa Rica.

While you may not find this little songbird in the mountains surrounding our retreat, it is common in the bustling lowlands, especially near bodies of water like rivers, streams, and ponds. So, if you plan an adventure in the lowlands after your retreat, keep an eye out for this feathered friend!

A Distinctive Look

With a small size of 15 to 18 cm, the Grey-capped Flycatcher is a bundle of energy. Its plumage is a striking combination of contrasting colors. The upper parts are a warm, rich brown, with the wing and tail feathers tipped with rust. But the true stars of the show are the head and the underside.

The head is a masterpiece of black and white. A sleek black crown and mask frame a bright white eyebrow, a band that boldly extends above the eye. The throat is pure white, creating a sharp contrast with the bright yellow that dominates the underside. This sunny yellow stretches from the chest to the belly, making the Grey-capped Flycatcher a beacon of color in the lush greenery.

A Life by the Water

Unlike its larger cousin, the Great Kiskadee, the Grey-capped Flycatcher is found almost exclusively near water. Rivers, streams, ponds, and even flooded forests are its preferred habitat. Here, it perches in plain view on branches overlooking the water, its keen eyes scanning for prey.

The Grey-capped Flycatcher is an insectivore, feeding on a variety of insects it catches in mid-air or gleans from leaves and branches. It is an agile hunter, constantly on the move, flying and hovering as it pursues its next meal.

A Vocal Announcer

The Grey-capped Flycatcher is not shy about announcing its presence. Its call is a distinctive, buzzing « kiskaadie, » a sharp two-toned whistle it repeats frequently. This vocalization, combined with its colorful plumage and waterside habits, makes it an easily identifiable bird for birdwatchers.

A Resident Charmer

The Grey-capped Flycatcher is a non-migratory bird, meaning you can observe it year-round in the lowlands of Costa Rica. It is a common resident, and its playful presence adds a touch of vitality to the wetland ecosystems.

So, if you find yourself exploring the lowlands of Costa Rica, keep an eye out for this burst of colorful energy. The Grey-capped Flycatcher might just become your favorite feathered companion on your Costa Rican adventure!
