High in the mountains of Costa Rica, where the air is fresh and the panoramas endless, you might spot a small brown bird darting agilely through the air. This unsung hero of the insect world is the rough-winged swallow, a common bird often overlooked due to its modest plumage.

While its flashy cousins, the toucans and macaws, draw attention with their bright colors, the rough-winged swallow plays an essential role in Costa Rica’s ecosystem. Let’s take a closer look at this fascinating little bird.

A Master of the Skies

The rough-winged swallow is a small songbird, weighing only 16 grams. Its brown back and dark throat blend perfectly into the environment, allowing it to sneak up on unsuspecting insects. But don’t be fooled by its simple appearance. This swallow is a champion of maneuverability.

Its name comes from the tiny hooks on the leading edge of its outer feathers, giving it a rough texture. These « rough wings » help the swallow perform incredible aerial acrobatics, darting, diving, and changing direction in a flash, catching insects mid-flight.

In Search of Your Feathered Friend

While you can spot the rough-winged swallow throughout Costa Rica, it particularly favors the mountains during the summer, near freshwater sources like lakes, rivers, and ponds. Look for them flying low over the water, their wingbeats slower and more deliberate than other swallows.

They often fly alone or in small groups, but keep an eye out for mixed flocks of swallows, where the rough-winged swallow might mingle with its more colorful cousins.

A Borrower, Not a Builder

Unlike some of its swallow cousins that build elaborate mud nests, the rough-winged swallow takes a more relaxed approach to nesting. It prefers to use pre-existing cavities and burrows created by other birds or mammals. You might find them nesting in holes along riverbanks or under bridges.

A Vital Part of the Ecosystem

The rough-winged swallow plays a crucial role in controlling insect populations. As insectivores, they spend their days tirelessly hunting flying insects, helping maintain a healthy balance in the ecosystem.

A Sign of a Healthy Habitat

The presence of rough-winged swallows is a good indicator of a healthy environment. Their reliance on freshwater sources and natural cavities tells us that the surrounding ecosystem is thriving.

So, next time you’re at our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, keep an eye out for this little brown acrobat. The rough-winged swallow, though discreet, is a vital part of the tapestry of life in the mountains and a silent guardian of the skies.
