A Shy Gem of the Highlands: The Brown-Collared Columbine

Home / Oiseaux / A Shy Gem of the Highlands: The Brown-Collared Columbine

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, amidst whispering pines and emerald valleys, flies a rare and elusive jewel – the Brown-breasted Parakeet (Claravis mondetoura). This small pigeon, unlike its more common cousins, prefers the solitude of cloud forests and foothill woods, far from the lowlands and human hustle.

For those lucky enough to spot one, the Brown-breasted Parakeet is a sight to behold. The male sports stunning plumage – a deep steel blue-gray covers most of his body, contrasting with a white forehead, cheeks, and throat. The real showstopper, however, is the broad brown band adorning his chest, a splash of color that sets him apart from other ground doves. His wings are marked with thick black bars and his tail feathers, a brilliant white except for the central pair, only flash briefly in flight.

The female Brown-breasted Parakeet is less flamboyant, dressed in a palette of subtle browns. However, a closer look reveals subtle highlights – a dark beak, a hint of reddish-brown bars on the wings, and a rump and tail devoid of the rusty tones found in similar lowland doves.

These shy birds are more often heard than seen. Their call, a soft and plaintive cooing, echoes through the mountain forests. They are most active at dawn and dusk, when they emerge from the dense underbrush to feed on the forest floor. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, particularly those found on the ground or in low vegetation.

The Brown-breasted Parakeet is particularly cherished by birdwatchers due to its rarity and elusive nature. Sightings are infrequent, and patience is required. However, for those willing to venture into cooler climates and explore the hidden trails of Costa Rica’s highlands, the chance encounter with this little jewel is a reward worth waiting for.

Tips for Spotting the Brown-breasted Parakeet:

  • Habitat: Look for them in foothill and mountain forests, especially in areas with seed-bearing bamboo stands.
  • Time of Day: Early morning and late afternoon offer the best chances to observe them.
  • Listen Carefully: Their soft cooing might be your best clue to their presence.
  • Stay Still: These birds are easily startled by sudden movements. Be patient and observe from a distance.

While the Brown-breasted Parakeet may be difficult to find, for those seeking a unique encounter with a Costa Rican avian treasure, the quest through misty mountains will surely be an unforgettable adventure.
