In the cloud-kissed mountains of Costa Rica, a secretive resident flits among the trees. This elusive bird, the Black Tyrant, adds a touch of intrigue to the vibrant tapestry of life in our mountain retreat. Though not as common as its colorful neighbors, spotting this bird is a true treasure for birdwatchers.

A creature of the clouds

The Black Tyrant (Contopus lugubris) belongs to the tyrant flycatcher family. Contrary to its name, it is not entirely black. Imagine a bird dressed in a sooty gray suit, with a hint of olive showing on its underside. A prominent crest adds a touch of majesty to its appearance. This crest is slightly more pronounced than that of other Tyrannis, making it a useful identification feature.

These solitary birds prefer the coolness of the Talamanca mountain forests, specifically between 1250 and 2150 meters in altitude. So, if you stay at our mountain retreat, keep your eyes open during your hikes or while relaxing on your balcony – you might be lucky enough to spot one perched on a branch at the forest edge or crossing a clearing.

A life of mystery

The Black Tyrant is a creature of secretive habits. Unlike its more vocal cousins, it is not known for elaborate songs. However, you might hear its short, sharp calls (« pip ») echoing through the mountains. Patience and careful observation are essential to add this bird to your Costa Rican bird list.

Although little is known about their breeding habits, we know that females build a wide, cup-shaped nest from moss and lichens. This nest, lined with plant fibers, is often placed high on a branch, providing a safe haven for their young.

A glimpse of the highlands

Spotting a Black Tyrant is a privilege reserved for those who venture into the cooler, higher areas of Costa Rica. Here, in our mountain retreat, you will find yourself surrounded by the ideal habitat for these enigmatic birds. With a bit of patience and a good dose of enthusiasm for birdwatching, you might be rewarded with a glimpse of this unique highland resident of Costa Rica.
