Home / Oiseaux / À la découverte des secrets de la nuit : La chevêche des tempéraments pacifiques

At dusk, as our Costa Rican retreat nestled in the heart of the mountains is enveloped in darkness, a chorus of nocturnal creatures awakens. Among them, the Pacific screech owl, a resident shrouded in mystery, begins its nightly patrol. Here, in your secluded sanctuary nestled among the peaks, you have a unique opportunity to encounter this little-known predator.

The Pacific screech owl, scientifically known as Megascops cooperi, may be small in size, but it doesn’t lack personality. This medium-sized owl, measuring just 23-25 centimeters long, sports prominent ear tufts that stand proudly on its head. Don’t be fooled by its gentleness – its bright yellow eyes with remarkable acuity are perfectly adapted for hunting under the cover of night.

While you may be familiar with the classic hoot of owls, the Pacific screech owl has a different vocal repertoire. A keen ear might catch its high-pitched two-tone whistle, a sound often described as a « piercing double-note call. » This piercing call is the owl’s way of communicating with potential mates and defending its territory.

Speaking of territory, the Pacific screech owl is a resident of the Pacific slopes of Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to Costa Rica. In our mountain retreat, you can encounter this owl in a variety of habitats. It favors semi-open areas dotted with trees, making our foothills with pockets of vegetation and clearings an ideal home. Interestingly, the Pacific screech owl can also be found in mangroves, giant cardon cactus forests, and even near lake fields.

A true nocturnal predator, the Pacific screech owl hunts a variety of prey. Insects, lizards, small mammals, and even scorpions fall victim to its sharp talons. With its excellent vision and silent flight, the owl swoops down on unsuspecting prey, making it a crucial element of the local ecosystem.

As elusive as they are fascinating, Pacific screech owls are not often seen during the day. However, with a bit of patience and a night walk guided by our expert naturalists, you might catch a glimpse of this shy hunter perched on a branch, its silhouette standing out against the moonlit sky.

In our Costa Rican retreat, we offer you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the natural world. With comfortable accommodations nestled among whispering pines and knowledgeable guides to lead you, you can witness the Pacific screech owl and countless other avian wonders firsthand. So, come listen to the secrets of the night and let us unveil the magic of the Costa Rican rainforest, one nocturnal creature at a time.
