High in the Costa Rican mountains, our retreat might seem an unlikely destination for a bird typically associated with coasts. But believe it or not, the Bonaparte’s gull (Chroicocephalus philadelphia) is a surprise visitor to our tranquil corner of paradise.
While not as common as some of our resident birds, spotting this petite gull adds a delightful element of surprise to your birdwatching experience here. So, let’s delve into the world of this feathered friend!
A Tiny Traveler
The Bonaparte’s gull is a true globetrotter. Breeding in northern North America, it migrates south for the winter, with some individuals reaching as far as South America. This tiny traveler, one of the smallest gull species in the world at just 28-38 cm (11-15 inches) in length, graces our mountain skies during these migratory journeys.
Dressed to Impress (Seasonally)
The Bonaparte’s gull’s plumage is a study in contrasts. In breeding season, adults sport a chic slaty-black hood, transforming them from elegant grey-and-white birds into dapper gentlemen (or should we say gentle gulls?). This striking hood disappears in non-breeding plumage, replaced by a more subdued grey head.
Regardless of the season, their short, thin black bill and orange-red legs add pops of color. Juveniles lack the dramatic hood, but their plumage offers a delightful surprise – a duller version of the adult breeding plumage can appear in a small percentage of first-year birds.
A Master of the Skies
While at our mountain retreat, you might see Bonaparte’s gulls soaring effortlessly on the thermals, their wings outstretched, seemingly gliding with minimal effort. These agile birds are adept at aerial acrobatics, often seen dipping and diving as they hunt for insects, small fish, and other aquatic creatures.
Their calls, a high-pitched “kee-way” or a short, barking “kak,” might be your first clue to their presence overhead. So keep your eyes peeled (and ears tuned) for these little aerial performers!
A Glimpse of the Wider World
The appearance of Bonaparte’s gulls at our retreat is a beautiful reminder of the interconnectedness of the natural world. Their long migrations showcase the incredible journeys undertaken by birds, highlighting the importance of preserving healthy ecosystems across vast distances.
So, the next time you’re here at our Costa Rican mountain retreat, look up! You might be surprised by the tiny treasure flitting across the vast canvas of our mountain sky – the Bonaparte’s gull, a feathered visitor gracing us with its presence on its grand global adventure.
