Here at our mountain retreat, we tend to focus on the incredible avian diversity gracing our lush rainforests. But Costa Rica boasts a rich tapestry of birdlife that extends far beyond the tree line. Today, we set our sights on the coast, with a special spotlight on a rather unexpected visitor: the Gray-hooded Gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus).
While not a permanent resident, the Gray-hooded Gull graces Costa Rica’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts with its presence, particularly during the winter months (November to April). This small gull, typically measuring around 14 inches long, is a distinctive sight.
A Look Like No Other:
- Breeding Season Beauty: Adult Gray-hooded Gulls during breeding season are a sight to behold. They sport a striking pale gray “hood” that extends from the head down the nape.
- Sharp Contrasts: This hood is offset by a medium gray body, darker than its close relative, the Black-headed Gull.
- A Touch of Red: A bright red bill and legs add a vibrant pop of color.
- Winging Wonders: The wings showcase a contrast of dark flight feathers with prominent white “mirrors” at the tips. The underwing is a cool, dark gray, completing the elegant picture.
Winter Wear:
Come winter, the Gray-hooded Gull trades its flashy hood for a more subdued look. The distinctive gray hood fades, replaced by darker streaks on the side of the face. The bill and legs might also appear duller.
Not Quite Migratory:
Unlike many gulls, the Gray-hooded Gull isn’t a true migrant. Its main breeding grounds lie in South America and sub-Saharan Africa. However, during the winter months, its range expands, with sightings becoming more frequent in Costa Rica, particularly along the coasts. For birders visiting our country, spotting this unique visitor can be a thrilling challenge.
Where to Look:
The Gray-hooded Gull frequents coastal areas, favoring beaches, estuaries, and mangroves. They’re scavengers by nature, so keep an eye out near fishing piers, harbors, and garbage dumps near the coast. With a bit of patience and a keen eye, you might just catch a glimpse of this special visitor.
A Glimpse of the Unexpected:
While our mountain retreat might not be the first place that comes to mind for gull-watching, a trip to Costa Rica’s stunning coastline offers the possibility of encountering this fascinating avian visitor. So, the next time you’re enjoying the sun-drenched beaches of our beautiful country, keep your eyes peeled for the Gray-hooded Gull – a true rarity gracing Costa Rica’s shores.
