A Flash of Fire in the Canopy: The Enchanting Western Tanager

While Costa Rica is a haven for tropical birds with vibrant plumage, some visitors might be surprised to find a familiar sight flitting through the mountaintop forests. The Western Tanager, a dazzling songbird more commonly associated with western North America, makes a seasonal home in the high peaks of our country.

For birders and nature enthusiasts staying at Hotel Rive, a glimpse of this fiery visitor is a true treat. Let’s delve into the captivating world of the Western Tanager!

A Blaze of Color:

The male Western Tanager is a sight to behold. Imagine a burst of sunshine personified – his entire body is a brilliant yellow, except for his head, which is a fiery orange-red. Sharp black wings, back, and tail create a striking contrast, making him a standout amongst the verdant mountain foliage.

Females and immature Western Tanagers take on a more subdued appearance. They are cloaked in olive-green with touches of yellow, particularly on their underparts. This camouflage allows them to blend seamlessly into the leaves, keeping them safe from predators.

A Melodious Mountain Resident:

While the male’s plumage is undeniably eye-catching, the Western Tanager’s song is another delightful aspect to discover. Their vocalizations are described as short, burry melodies with a rising and falling cadence. They often sing two, three, or four-note phrases, filling the mountain air with a cheerful tune.

Hidden Amongst the Pines:

The Western Tanager prefers open coniferous forests, particularly those dominated by pine trees. Here, they can expertly navigate the upper canopy, their bright colors surprisingly well-hidden amongst the needles. Spotting them can be a challenge, so keeping an ear out for their song is your best bet.

A Life on the Move:

The Western Tanager is a migratory bird, spending its summers breeding in the mountain forests of Costa Rica and Guatemala. Come winter, they head south to warmer climes in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. During migration and on their wintering grounds, they are often seen in small flocks, sometimes mingling with other tanager species or Black-headed Grosbeaks.

If you’re lucky enough to spot a Western Tanager during your stay at Hotel Rive, take a moment to appreciate this unique visitor. Their vibrant colors and melodious songs are a delightful reminder of the amazing diversity of birdlife found in Costa Rica, even in the heart of our mountain ranges.
