High in the lush canopy of Costa Rica’s rainforests, a flash of bright yellow catches your eye. It darts among the leaves, a small ball of sunshine with a surprisingly sophisticated hat. This is the Gray-headed Tanager, a resident of the shaded understory, gracing our mountain retreat with its presence.

The Gray-headed Tanager (Eucometis penicillata) may be small, but its plumage packs a punch. True to its name, its head is a cool, clean gray, beautifully contrasting with its bright yellow underparts. The upper parts are a muted olive green, creating perfect camouflage against the green foliage. But don’t be fooled by its subtle upper body: the Gray-headed Tanager is a bundle of personality!

These energetic birds are most often seen flitting about the lower and middle levels of the rainforest, usually alone or in pairs. They are not particularly shy, and with a bit of patience, you might catch a glimpse from your private balcony at our retreat.

Listen for its melodious song, a rich, chirpy warble that can sometimes extend into a long, impressive display. It’s a delightful addition to the symphony of rainforest sounds surrounding our mountain sanctuary.

Interesting Facts about the Gray-headed Tanager:

  • The Solitary Ranger: The Gray-headed Tanager is the only member of the genus Eucometis, making it a true rarity in the bird world.
  • Habitat Heroine: While they prefer the shaded understory of humid tropical forests, they can also be found in swamps and even in heavily degraded old forests. This adaptability ensures their continued survival in a changing world.
  • Army Ant Snacks: These lively birds sometimes follow swarms of army ants, catching insects disturbed by the marching horde. It’s a clever way to find a plentiful and easy meal.
