While toucans are known for their colossal beaks, the Emerald Toucanet is a smaller family member, measuring only 11 to 15 inches long. However, don’t be fooled by its size! This magnificent bird boasts plumage worthy of its name. Its body is a sublime emerald green, shining like a polished gemstone. The underside is a lighter shade, creating a subtle contrast that highlights its graceful form.

But the true highlight is the toucanet’s beak. Unlike its larger cousins, the beak of the Emerald Toucanet is a fascinating combination of black and yellow. The black mandible contrasts sharply with the bright yellow maxilla, which itself has a unique black spot near the nostrils and a white vertical band at the base. This complex pattern adds a touch of whimsy to the bird’s already captivating appearance.

If you’re lucky enough to spot an Emerald Toucanet during your retreat, you’ll likely see it in pairs or small groups of up to 10 individuals. These social birds weave through the forest canopy, their bright green bodies vibrantly splashing against the emerald backdrop. They are particularly fond of fruit trees, where their beaks come in very handy. Despite their size, toucanet beaks are surprisingly light, thanks to an airy structure with thin walls. This allows them to maneuver skillfully between branches and reach hidden fruits.

However, their diet is not limited to fruits. Emerald Toucanets are omnivores and enjoy a menu that includes insects, lizards, and even small frogs. Their keen eyesight and sharp beak make them effective hunters, adding another layer of intrigue to their fascinating lives.

Listen carefully as you explore the rainforest trails. The call of the Emerald Toucanet is a series of high-pitched whistles and chirps, adding to the symphony of sounds that fills the mountain air. These vocalizations may play a role in communication within their groups, perhaps serving as territorial markers or contact calls.

Seeing an Emerald Toucanet flit through the trees is an unforgettable experience. It is a reminder of the incredible biodiversity thriving in Costa Rica’s rainforest. Here, in our mountain retreat, you have the chance to encounter these emerald jewels for yourself, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
