High in the canopy of our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, a vibrant melody pierces the emerald silence. It is not the exuberant song of the toucan, nor the flamboyant cries of the scarlet macaw. It is a more subtle serenade, a whispered tune that evokes hidden beauty – the song of the Yellow-backed Vireo.

A close relative of the Red-eyed Vireo, this small songbird is a touch of lemon green amidst the lush foliage. While the Red-eyed Vireo graces the central valley region, the Yellow-backed Vireo is a precious sight in the tropical mountains. Though smaller than its counterpart, the Yellow-backed Vireo sports a bolder wardrobe. Its olive-green upper parts shimmer with a brighter, almost luminous green, earning its name.

Look for a revealing contrast – a grayish crown with dark edges rests on the bright green back. A pristine white eyebrow adds a touch of elegance, framing the bird’s expressive reddish-brown eyes. A dark line extends from the base of the beak to these captivating eyes, adding a touch of intrigue to its gaze.

Turn the bird over (if you’re lucky enough to get a good look!), and you’ll be greeted by a pleasant surprise. The underparts are a canvas of pure white, splashed with a bright yellow on the chest, flanks, and sides. This flash of sunshine adds a touch of joy to the Yellow-backed Vireo’s appearance.

Young Yellow-backed Vireos are a bit less flamboyant. Their plumage lacks the brilliance of adults, with browner tones on the back and less prominent yellow on the underparts. Their eyes are also a warm brown, later transforming into a fiery reddish-brown in adulthood.

The Yellow-backed Vireo is a true citizen of the rainforest canopy. An expert acrobat, it flits from branch to branch, gleaning insects and spiders from the leaves with its pointed beak. Its constant foraging helps maintain the fragile balance of the rainforest ecosystem.

While the Red-eyed Vireo is known for its complex whistled song, the melody of the Yellow-backed Vireo is a simpler affair. Imagine a House Sparrow that has taken a few singing lessons – the result is a monotonous yet pleasant series of chirps and whistles. Though less elaborate, the song of the Yellow-backed Vireo adds its own unique charm to the rainforest symphony.

Spotting a Yellow-backed Vireo can be a challenge, but its persistent calls often betray its presence. If you’re lucky enough to glimpse this vibrant songbird flitting through the mountain canopy, take a moment to appreciate its beauty. It’s a fleeting encounter, a touch of lemon green on the emerald tapestry of the rainforest, a reminder of the hidden wonders that Costa Rica harbors.
