Un Destello de Sol: La Reinamora Cola Dorada

Home / aves / Un Destello de Sol: La Reinamora Cola Dorada

High above the canopy of the cloud forest in our mountain retreat in Costa Rica, a vibrant melody pierces the tranquil air. It is the unmistakable song of the Golden-tailed Sapphire, a dazzling splash of color that frequents the humid lowlands surrounding our sanctuary. While you may not see them perched on your balcony like our resident hummingbirds, these energetic birds are a common sight (and sound) in the lower regions of our mountain range.

The Golden-tailed Sapphire is a true attraction. Imagine a bird bathed in sunlight. Its body is a bright yellow, with a stark contrast of jet black on the back, wings, and lower face. But the star of the show is undoubtedly the tail. Unlike other warblers, the Golden-tailed Sapphire lives up to its name with a black tail on top, bordered by a vibrant yellow that flashes like a beacon in flight. Even from below, the tail appears almost completely yellow, making it a truly unique identifier.

These medium-sized songbirds, measuring about 23 centimeters long, are more than just a pretty face. Their rich whistled song is a delightful melody, often described as “cheerful” and “rhythmic.” It is a joyful tune that perfectly complements the lush green backdrop of the Costa Rican rainforest.

While not the shyest of birds, Golden-tailed Sapphires can be elusive. They prefer tangled thickets and dense vegetation bordering rivers and streams, occasionally venturing into fields with tall weeds. Enthusiastic watchers will have the best chance of seeing them flitting among the foliage, their bright yellow bodies contrasting sharply with the emerald green leaves.

While you may not see them every day at our mountain retreat, a trip to the lower valleys or a hike near a riverbed might reward you with a glimpse of this dazzling songbird. And if you’re lucky enough to hear its vibrant melody resonating through the rainforest, take a moment to appreciate the flash of sunshine that is the Golden-tailed Sapphire.

Stay tuned for our next blog post, where we will delve into another of Costa Rica’s feathered residents!
